Best Times to Fly Out of LAX, Burbank, John Wayne and Long Beach

Choosing the right departure window in Los Angeles is worth more than any shortcut your app can find. Here is how each airport behaves through the day.

In Los Angeles, the flight you book determines the drive you get. A departure 90 minutes earlier can mean a completely different traffic picture and a calmer terminal.

Here is how the five main airports we serve behave through the day, and what pickup time we recommend for each.

LAX

LAX has two heavy departure banks: early morning transcontinental flights, and the late afternoon to evening international wave. The terminal loop is at its worst roughly 6:00–9:00 AM and 3:00–8:00 PM.

Mid-morning departures between 10:00 AM and noon are the sweet spot: security lines are shorter and the drive in is far more predictable.

Hollywood Burbank (BUR)

Burbank is the easiest airport in the region for Valley, Hollywood and Pasadena clients. Terminal times are short, so the drive is the only variable — and the drive is fine outside of 7:00–9:30 AM and 4:00–7:00 PM.

John Wayne (SNA) and Long Beach (LGB)

For Orange County and South Bay clients these airports usually beat LAX on total door-to-gate time, even when the airfare is slightly higher. Avoid northbound and southbound 405 movements during the commute peaks and both are genuinely relaxed airports.

Ontario (ONT)

Ontario is a strong option for Inland Empire travelers and for anyone flying on a weekend when the 10 and 60 are clear. Weekday afternoons eastbound are the window to avoid.

How much lead time to build in

These are the pickup buffers we recommend before your scheduled departure time.

  • LAX domestic: 3 hours before departure during peak, 2.5 hours off-peak.
  • LAX international: 3.5 hours before departure.
  • Burbank, John Wayne, Long Beach: 2 hours domestic.
  • Add 30–45 minutes for any pickup that crosses the 405 or the 101 during commute hours.
